Lacey Corbett was always drawn to beauty from a young age and knew she wanted to pursue a career within the industry. Her experience at The French was very eye-opening when she found herself surronded by like-minded people sharing the same passions as her. Lacey was able to learn a wide range of skills while pursuing the dual diploma, which led her to discover a passion for brow and lash services.

A surge of inspiration, hard-work and determination helped her obtain an industry position four weeks prior to graduation. She now has secured her dream job as a beauty therapist at Beauty In The Woods; a spa that adds a touch of luxe to a small country town. Lacey’s days are now filled with performing an extensive range of beauty treatments using certified organic skin care brands and she couldn’t be happier. One of her most memorable moments since graduation was receiving posistive online reviews, reassuring her expertise and kind nature. We sat down with Lacey to unpack her time at The French and gain insight in how to secure your dream job in the beauty industry.

What motivated you to pursue a career in beauty therapy?

Ive always found myself drawn to all things beauty from a young age. I really love that the beauty industry is always evolving and you aren’t restricted to just one sector, there are so many avenues you can take, the options and opportunities are endless!

What was your main motivation for studying at the French?

The French Beauty Academy has a reputation that’s comparable to no other. I knew that I was going to achieve my best results, have the greatest opportunities and experience a year of growth at The French right from the get-go.

What was your favourite part about studying at the French? How would you describe your experience from the day you started at orientation?

My journey at The French was everything I hoped it would be and more. From my very first day, until my very last, I felt inspired and supported by everyone around me. Just like starting anything new, I was nervous, but after my first week on campus, these nerves subsided and I felt so comfortable.

How did the French help prepare you for life as a professional beauty therapist?

The French helps all students prepare for life as a professional therapist in every way possible. The resources provided and used on campus are of such good quality, and a lot of which you will use when you are working out in industry. All the educators have an abundance of great advice and personal tips and tricks that really help students.

Did you have a favourite teacher / subject at the french? Why?

I was incredibly fortunate to have Aly Hope for the entire duration of my course. You create special bonds with all of your educators at The French, all will give you different advice, teach you different things and support you in different ways, this is the beauty of it! My favourite subject was Specialised Facials, I really enjoyed expanding my knowledge in this subject.

What is the best advice you received from your study at The French?

Never stop learning! When you stop learning, you stop growing.

What were some of the invaluable lessons or most important thing that you learnt at the French that you have been able to apply to your new career?

Something very special about The French is a program called ‘Service Excellence’, this is a small part of every morning on campus that helps us as individuals learn and apply valuable traits that it takes to be a beauty therapist! Some topics of ‘Service Excellence’ you will resonate more with than others, I can safely say I have been able to apply so many of these traits, lessons and knowledge into my position as a beauty therapist.

How easy was it for you to gain work after graduating? Tell me about your first career ‘break’?

The French will support you in every possible way when it comes to securing a job in the industry. I completed my industry placement days with a beautiful team of girls, better known as Bobbie Charles. I was lucky enough to obtain a position with them 4 weeks before I graduated. Your first job in the industry is a very important one! This is where you can finally apply all of your new skills and understanding out in the real world.

What elements of your study allowed you to obtain your new job? Were there any specific skills that you learned from your time at The French that you then highlighted in order to be hired?

All elements of my Diploma helped me obtain my current job. Having a great understanding of every subject was admirable, but definitely knowing the fundamentals of performing a facial and being able to do a good brow sculpt and tint was key for my current position.

How are The French graduates perceived out in the industry?

The French Beauty Academy students are really highly regarded out in the industry. Educators at The French have so many wonderful connections and I believe so many employers actively seek The French Beauty Academy graduates.

What do you most enjoy about your new job? Has there been a memorable moment since you graduated?

I’ve loved finding what I’m most passionate about, this being brows and lashes, and being able to build my client base up around these services! A super memorable moment for me since graduating was receiving my first positive online review, this was such a special feeling and a good touch of reassurance.

Describe a day in the life of you at work...

I wake up and make myself an iced coffee! I love a slow morning and taking my time getting ready, I pick a cute outfit and head into the salon. I turn on the wax pots and check my calendar to see what I’ll be doing for the day. Typically I do a few brow sculpts, laminations, tints and lash lifts, these are my passion! Usually there’s a few facials on the agenda too, I love how relaxing facials are for both the client and me.

Beauty is never going anywhere, it’s such a booming industry. There are always new trends to jump on board of and people are really recognising the importance of self care at the moment.

Absolutely go for it! What you put in is what you will get out. Enjoy the journey and make the most of every second.

What are your goals for the next few years? Do you have an ultimate career ambition?

I am super pleased with where I’m at currently. I work amongst a beautiful team of girls and I absolutely love what I do. I’m happy perfecting my skills for now and learning more and more every day. You just never know what the future has in store.
