Say Goodbye to Self-Doubt

Do you struggle with self-doubt? Do you have a critical voice in your head that keeps putting you down? You’re not alone. Everyone struggles with their own insecurities from time to time, however there is a well-documented phenomenon called The Confidence Gap that has significant impacts on women’s career aspirations and achievements, leading to missed opportunities and unrealised potential. If you need help building your confidence to realise your full potential, stick around we’ve got you!

What is the Confidence Gap?

The Confidence Gap refers to the disparity in self-assurance between men and women, especially in the professional settings. Numerous studies show that women often underestimate their abilities, even when they’re just as competent as their male counterparts.

This gap, influenced by systemic barriers and societal expectations, can lead to self-doubt and hesitation in going after career opportunities. The impact is profound, with many talented women holding back from applying for jobs or promotions due to perceived inadequacies. This lack of confidence can significantly impact women as they pursue their dream careers in several ways:

CAREER ASPIRATIONS: Confidence influences career aspirations and the willingness to pursue ambitions and dream career goals, meaning women may be less likely to believe their dream job is out of reach if they doubt their abilities or fear failure.

SELF-ADVOCACY: Women may hesitate to advocate for themselves, negotiate for higher salaries, or pursue management or leadership positions due to lower confidence levels. This can result in missed opportunities for career advancement and financial growth.

NETWORKING AND SELF-PROMOTION: Building professional networks and promoting yourself or your small business are essential for career progression or business growth. However, women with lower confidence levels may feel hesitant to network or promote their achievements, which can hinder their visibility and recognition within their industry. In addition, for many women finding the time to build networks and relationships can be challenging for those who are caring for children or elderly parents, making it difficult to open new opportunities for growth or expansion in their careers.

Can confidence be taught?

The good news is that confidence is not a personality trait that we’re either born with or without; it’s a skill that can be acquired with practice and effort! Girls and boys are born with the same levels of self-confidence studies show, however with age, the gap begins to widen to its farthest point around the age of 18 when women have the lowest self confidence in their lifetime. This shows that confidence is something that is learned and developed largely influenced by gendered stereotypes and societal expectations placed on women and girls from a very young age.

How does The French build confidence?

At The French, we recognise the importance of helping our students overcome self-doubt and realise their full potential. Here are just a number of confidence-building initiatives throughout the student journey to empower women to pursue their aspirations with courage and conviction:

Priyanka’s dedication and ambition paid off! She is now pursuing her passion for beauty working as a Dermal and Laser Clinician at Clear Skincare Clinics, gaining employment during her studies at The French.

Priyanka hopes to expand her customer base, collaborate with healthcare professionals and gain recognition in industry.

OUR FLAGSHIP BEAUTY THERAPY DIPLOMA

What motivated you to pursue a career in beauty therapy?

Growing up, I was always fascinated by the transformative power of beauty treatments and how they could boost a person’s confidence. My passion for skincare and makeup led me to explore various techniques and products, which eventually inspired me to pursue a career as a dermal clinician. I realised that this profession would allow me to combine my love for helping others with my interest in the beauty industry. The opportunity to make clients feel good about themselves while enhancing their natural features truly motivates me and makes being a skin therapist a fulfilling career choice.

What was your main motivation for studying at the French?

To follow my passion, I wanted to study at the best institution, The French Beauty Academy. The Campus offers modern facilities, experienced instructors, and a supportive environment for aspiring skin professionals. All my educators and fellow peers became a family!

What was your favourite part about studying at the French? How would you describe your experience from the day you started at orientation?

My favourite part about studying at The French was just being on campus, it felt like home. I absolutely loved my educators, my principal, vice principal and friends. It was the best decision in my life, giving me an experience that I’ll cherish forever. My first day I was full of excitement, but also nervous. I remained focused during my time at The French and always aimed to help others and volunteer when I could.

How did the French help prepare you for life as a professional beauty therapist?

At The French everything is incredible, the amazing educators, who are the spine of the academy, with their professionalism and experience in their fields, learning from them was a blessing. The thorough teachings from the educators, for example, explaining the science behind the treatments and techniques. This knowledge gave me wings to fly high and achieve all my dreams!

Did you have a favourite teacher / subject at the french? Why?

Each of the educators at The French were truly amazing and inspiring and I can’t say that enough. Their guidance and dedication towards teaching, helped me to achieve my dreams. I can’t thank Kerry, Brooke and Nas enough for being my amazing educators, they helped me immensely to achieve and accomplish my diploma seamlessly.

What is the best advice you received from your study at the French?

Nothing is impossible, everything can be achieved, all you need is patience, ambition, dedication, and perseverance.

What are some of the invaluable lessons or most important things that you learnt at the french that you have been able to apply to your new career?

To be resilient in achieving your goals. You will come across hurdles in your journey, but all you truly need is ONE reason to achieve that goal, telling yourself ‘Yes, I can do it and I will do it no matter what!’ will help.

This advice stuck with me, and I feel it’s one of the invaluable lessons I’ve learnt.

How easy was it for you to gain work after graduating? Tell me about your first career ‘break’?

I would say, it was very easy for me. I had my first job before I graduated and it was at the biggest clinic in Australia, Clear Skincare Clinic as a Dermal and Laser Therapist. I always wanted to work in a clinic environment, with doctors and nurses, studying at The French helped me achieve this goal.

What elements of your study allowed you to obtain your new job? Were there any specific skills that you learned from your time at The French that you then highlighted in order to be hired?

The depth and thoroughness of the Diploma helped me learn all the essentials required to become a skin therapist. We studied the anatomy of the human body, bones, skin, health, diet, at one point I felt I was studying to become a doctor.

Although it was intense, it helped me gain a solid foundation of knowledge about skin, in return helping me get the interview at Clear Skincare Clinic.

How are The French graduates perceived out in the industry?

The French Beauty Academy is well known for its high standards and professionalism. All the businesses in our industry are very much aware of The French Beauty Academy and the ‘Frenchies’. Frenchies are very well groomed and charming, making them more approachable and stand out for hire.

Describe a day in the life of you at work…

A day in my life as a dermal and laser clinician typically involves assessing and treating various skin conditions. I start by reviewing client records and conducting consultations to understand specific skin concerns. Treatment procedures may include chemical peels, microdermabrasion, advanced skin treatments or laser therapy.

I also educate my clients on skincare routines and recommend appropriate products.

I’m also continuously learning about new skincare technologies and staying updated on industry trends which is essential as a dermal clinician.

Why is it so exciting to work within the beauty industry right now?

Firstly, there’s a growing emphasis on inclusivity, diversity, and sustainability, leading to innovative products and practices. Advances in skincare technology and a focus on holistic well-being, contributing to dynamic opportunities.

Social media has played a significant role, allowing professionals to showcase their work, connect with clients, and stay updated on trends about beauty and wellness.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO STUDENTS WHO ARE WANTING TO STUDY A BEAUTY THERAPY DIPLOMA AT THE FRENCH BEAUTY ACADEMY?

Ultimately, pursuing a Diploma in Beauty Therapy requires dedication, a love for the craft, and a commitment to ongoing learning and development. In saying this, I would advise students to network and make the most of The French industry connections, work on communicating effectively when dealing with clients and finally, choosing a program that offers a well-rounded education.

What are your goals for the next few years? Do you have an ultimate career ambition?

As a dermal clinician, I have some short-term and long-term goals which include, continuing my education to stay up to date with trends and technology, pursuing specialised certifications, expand and retain my customer base, collaborate with other healthcare professionals, and achieve recognition in the industry.

PART TWO OF OUR SERIES

Step into 2024 with us as we decode the beauty landscape through the lens of TikTok’s hottest trend: ‘Ins and Outs.’

In this Beauty Edition of the series, we unpack the TikTok certified beauty must-haves and the bid-farewells for 2024 from skincare, to treatments and makeup and beyond.

Ins and Outs 2024

IN’s

Skin streaming: Streamline your skin care to use fewer products that effectively fulfil multiple needs, rather than using a drawer full of single-purpose-only products #skinstreaming

Skin cycling: In the spirit of simplification, a four-night Skin Cycle alternates an exfoliant, retinol-based product, and a hydrator to maximise cell regeneration #skincycling

Matte Makeup: While we will never bid a final farewell to a dewy skin look; the 2016 matte finish is definitely making a triumphant return in 2024.

Silver: Cool-toned chromes are infiltrating fashion and makeup looks like never before!

Gua Sha / Facial Massage: A centuries-long practice in China, at-home facial massage techniques promote lymphatic drainage and a radiant (and snatched) complexion. Buccal massage gets bonus points for releasing jaw tension!

Makeup & Skincare with SPF: There are SO many amazing products that integrate SPF giving you literally zero excuse for not using sun protection in 2024.

Scalp Care: The ‘Skinification’ of your scalp! 2023 saw a huge rise in scalp spas. This is your sign to look after your crown from root to tip.

Ingestible Beauty: Beauty starts from within! We love amplifying a diet of healthy fats, fruits and veggies with Vida Glow supplements that contribute to gut health and radiant skin.

90s Cool-Toned Makeup: Take a nostalgic trip with cool-toned makeup reminiscent of the iconic ’90s era.

Pink Everything / Everywhere: The iconic Barbie movie is influencing hair, wardrobes and makeup looks alike and we are obsessed with #strawberrymakeup

OUT’s

High Contrast Concealer: Utilise colour theory to neutralise under-eye discolouration for the ultimate camouflaged colour correcting.

Heavy Cream Contour: Sadly, this once-trending technique is simply not practical or always wearable.

Stress: Cortisol (the stress hormone) undoes all the hard-work of any beauty regimen.

Highly Scented Formulas: In general, the more wonderful a product smells, the worse it can be for your skin. Fragrance aggravates the sensitive skin barrier, with essential oils topping the list of repeat offenders.

Dirty Pillowcases: Hygiene matters. Keep your pillowcases clean to prevent breakouts and maintain a clear complexion.

Makeup Wipes: If “wear sunscreen” is the golden rule of skin care, “wash your face” certainly takes home silver.

Going to Bed Late: Prioritise your beauty sleep. Sleep deprivation increases signs of aging and increases your cortisol levels.

Intense Workouts: Speaking of cortisol… while staying active is crucial, consistent extreme high-intensity workouts add stress on the nervous system. Add more low-impact exercises like the #hotgirlwalk to your regimen.

Over Exfoliating: Gentle exfoliation is key. Overdoing it can lead to an irritated, red and inflamed skin barrier.

Expensive Food Delivery: Save those pennies! You will get far more nutritional value from cooking at home. Pro tip: listen to audio books or podcasts while you cook!

Ins and outs 2024 on a cloud background

IN’s

Quality over quantity: Protect your space – keep your friendship circle small and surround yourself with people who lift you up.

Believing in yourself: Being delulu is the solulu! According to TikTok, being delusional is the new manifesting and we are SO here for it.

Solo dates: Revel in the joy of your own company to foster the most important relationship of all – the one with yourself!

Staying in: The end of 2023 saw the girlies across TikTok sharing their solo New Years Eve self-care schedules from face masks to bubble baths, moodboards and everything in between.

Less screen-time: Priotitise real-world connections and activities over constant digital engagement for a healthier and more mindful lifestyle.

Reading before bed: Self-help novels are OUT… finding a fiction genre that has you looking forward to reading before bed is IN

Eating more whole foods: Simply increase the amount of nutrient-dense, unprocessed foods in each plate of food to nourish your body and promote overall well-being.

Time in nature: Get outside, take off your shoes, literally stop and smell the roses.

Mono tasking: Goodbye to toxic girl-boss hustle culture and hello to a softer approach to life: on one task at a time to enhance productivity and minimise distractions.

Kindness: We’re making compassion and empathy a priority! Kind thoughts toward others and even kinder words to yourself.

Setting boundaries: It’s time to protect your peace. Learn how to verbally affirm your boundaries to others.

Setting goals: Channel your aspirations into tangible bite-sized objectives because small steps are better than none at all!

OUT’s

Procrastinating: Aren’t you tired of putting things off? Your soul sure is. Move in the direction of your values, every day!

Comparing with others: Be you, not them. Put in your blinders, block people who make you unhappy or feel ‘less than’ and focus on your journey, growth and achievements.

Going out: Foster social connections at-home. 2024 will see the return of the slumber party. Think movie marathons, creative cocktails and good old-fashioned girl time!

Mindless scrolling: Bestie, life it too short to spend it staring at a screen. Reclaim your time, be intentional with digital usage and savour the moments that matter offline.

Situationships: To put it simply… OUT: hot and cold, on and off, feelings and fear, anxiety and avoidance. IN: communication, people who prioritise you and self respect.

Not setting boundaries: Repeat after me… “I am not a doormat”

Over-thinking: It’s time to bid adieu to the cycle of overthinking and time to trust your instincts.

People pleasing: You don’t have to be a constant people pleaser in order for others to like and respect you. You have WAY more to offer.

5 Things You Didn't Know About The French Blog Image 1
5 Things You Didn't Know About The French Blog Image 2
5 Things You Didn't Know About The French Blog Image 3

1. Nationally Accredited Qualifications are the gold standard

The Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA), is the governing body that ensures that Australian qualifications align with industry needs. Our Nationally Accredited courses meet stringent quality standards set by ASQA, meaning you will graduate with a credential that is not just recognised but highly valued. Employers seek candidates with accredited qualifications, as it demonstrates that you’ve met the official training requirements, setting you apart from those with non-accredited alternatives. Only Registered Training Organisations (RTOs), like us, have the authority to deliver Nationally Accredited courses, ensuring you receive education of the highest calibre.

2. A Registered Training Organisation (RTO) must meet strict legislative requirements

A Registered Training Organisation (RTO) is an educational institution that is approved to deliver nationally recognised training in the VET sector. RTOs must demonstrate continuous commitment to quality education and training and adhere to strict standards that are continuously updated to meet industry demands. This commitment ensures students, industry, governments, and the community can have confidence in the integrity of our national qualifications. In contrast, studying at an unregulated private business may expose you to risks, as they do not have the same obligation to uphold industry standards. The value of studying at an RTO is not just in the education you receive but in the industry-recognised credential you earn.

3. A legacy institution with 35+ years of excellence in education

The significance of studying at a legacy institution goes far beyond an industry relevant curriculum; it’s also about being part of an established and connected community and an esteemed alumni network. Leading employer and industry recognition are the endorsement of our long standing legacy, ensuring a French qualification is unparalleled in today’s competitive job market. Our award-winning education leadership team draw upon their wealth of experience and knowledge in grooming our students as individuals, to recognise their personal potential and give them the very best life and learning experiences. Not only are the competency skills and knowledge learnt in our programs transferable into any service work environment, they enhance and set apart the employability skills in our graduates. We’ve also spent over 35 years crafting the most enriching student experience possible; from the on-campus culture, student academic support programs, pathways to external support networks across women’s support services, mental health and well being programs, our mission is to harness the power of the ripple effect that happens when one person decides to invest in themselves and their future and the subsequent impact this has. Join a legacy of educational excellence with over 35 years of experience to gain a world-class education and a reputation that speaks for itself.

4. Government funding options: Making quality education accessible

Unlocking quality education without financial barriers is possible. Only approved educational institutions are able to offer government-subsidised tuition fees. We offer various government funding options to provide eligible students with the financial support needed to cover tuition fees for approved courses. While eligibility criteria apply, this opportunity ensures that upfront payments don’t hinder your educational aspirations. Our commitment to accessible education aligns with the belief that quality training should be within reach for everyone, creating a pathway for you to pursue your passion without unnecessary financial burdens.

5. World-Class Facilities, Brands & Connections: Shaping the Future of Beauty Education

When you study at The French, each day you step into an environment designed solely for success. With world-class facilities and access to the most renowned brands, our state-of-the-art campuses simulate a luxurious real-world salon environment to elevate your learning experience. Our industry-leading and exclusive education partnerships with the world’s best brands integrate their learning materials directly into our curriculum. This ensures our course remains at the leading edge of scientific, technological and industry innovation. Embrace hands-on immersive training that sets the stage for your success in the beauty industry.

OUR FLAGSHIP BEAUTY THERAPY DIPLOMA

What motivated you to pursue a career in beauty therapy?

My main motivation was my mother who also became a beauty therapist, seeing how much effort she put into her studies and how much joy it brought her by being able to help people feel comfortable and relaxed in their own skin inspired me. Another motivator to pursue this career was wanting change, a change that allowed me to give back to people by helping them. Proving to others that this is in fact an amazing industry to get into and that beauty can take you to so many different places.

What was your main motivation for studying at the French?

The seed of doubt when it comes to studying beauty is common, with thoughts such as, ‘will this take me far?’, ‘Is this worth it?’, whether these thoughts come from people around you or yourself. It is worth it, and it can take you so far.

What was your favourite part about studying at the French? How would you describe your experience from the day you started at orientation?

My favourite part was the hands-on approach that was delivered by the French, in professional salon-based environments.

From the very first day of orientation, I felt the support and guidance needed to complete this course, as well as the motivation I needed to prove that I could do this. From orientation to graduation, you have educators motivating you all the way.

How did the French help prepare you for life as a professional beauty therapist?

The French prepared me in the sense that it doesn’t matter if a client is paying $10-$15 for a treatment or paying $1,000; everyone is deserving of the best quality and care.

The French taught us how to hold ourselves to a high standard when it comes to client treatments and our self-presentation.

Did you have a favourite teacher / subject at the french? Why?

I would have to say Alex Owens for facials, specialised facials, and waxing. Alex helped me feel confident in my own abilities by allowing me the opportunity to perform treatments without any pressure, but instead with support and words of encouragement.

What is the best advice you received from your study at the French?

“You are in a learning environment; it is ok to make mistakes”. This was said many times by many educators, and it really helped my peers and I to get out of our comfort zones and try new things.

How easy was it for you to gain work after graduating? Tell me about your first career ‘break’?

With persistence and support from my educators and cohort, I was able to secure both placement and employment with the company I am currently with. Being a “Frenchie” helped immensely, employers in the industry are aware of the reputation of The French graduates.

What elements of your study allowed you to obtain your new job? Were there any specific skills that you learned from your time at The French that you then highlighted in order to be hired?

Making use of the service excellence units and being encouraged to implement this knowledge into our everyday lives (not just when with clients) has helped. I’ve become more empathetic and emotionally intelligent when interacting with new clients and team members due to my newfound confidence and ‘team player’ abilities.

How are The French graduates perceived out in the industry?

We are perceived as professional, hard workers.

Describe a day in the life of you at work…

My day begins by opening the spa and setting up a relaxing space for clients before they enter, I turn on everyone’s favourite spaceship steam room. I then greet my clients at reception and welcome them to their time of relaxation at the spa.

Why is it so exciting to work within the beauty industry right now?

The technological advancements and the high quality of education given at The French allow you to explore so many different fields of the industry, medical, science, as well as the holistic and management side. With this ever-growing industry there is always room to better oneself.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO STUDENTS WHO ARE WANTING TO STUDY A BEAUTY THERAPY DIPLOMA AT THE FRENCH BEAUTY ACADEMY?

Gather as much information as you can about The French and what it stands for as this will help you learn about yourself and where you want to go in life.

Always remember that the educators on campus are there to help you through anything! It is a year of invaluable learning and experience.

What are your goals for the next few years? Do you have an ultimate career ambition?

My ultimate goal is to own a business with my mum. We want to offer fantastic services to clients as well as offer opportunities to students looming for placement while they are studying.

I was very lucky to have been employed before graduating. It has been an amazing opportunity to grow my skillset as a therapist and I must thank The French for it.
