French Alumni, Samantha has learnt that hard work and determination will ensure that you land your dream job. Samantha graduated from The French with her Diploma of Beauty Therapy in 2016 and continued on to complete her Advanced Diploma of Dermal Science and Graduate Certificate in IPL in 2017. She was then offered a position at a reputable anti-aging clinic. She has since taken on her dream role as a Skin Consultant with luxury cosmeceutical brand, Rationale.

Samantha’s journey began when she was working in a pharmacy and was coming across many people experiencing troublesome skin, which she had also been suffering. Through her experience, Samantha shared a strong sense of empathy which led her to devoting her life to becoming a unique therapist who puts skin health and self-love at the forefront of her treatments. Her favourite part about her current position at Rationale is aligning with a brand that supports extensive research and is committed to helping people with their skin transformations….

What motivated you to pursue a career in beauty therapy?

I had been working in pharmacy for over 9 years and had many direct personal encounters with patients that were experiencing troublesome skin. I have previously suffered with acne prone skin and was unsuccessful in treating it with Roaccutane. Through my own personal experience with problem skin I have always shared a strong sense of empathy to those confronted by self-esteem issues associated with skin disorders. In most of these cases that I saw I observed and noticed a common void in patient care and education. One day I decided that I would make it my mission to devote my life to becoming a unique therapist who could marry skin- knowledge and the nurturing of a beauty therapist in order to achieve skin health and self-love for all my clients.

What was your main motivation for studying at the French?

After making what I thought was a heroic decision at the time (changing careers) I was quickly and disappointedly deflated by my first scheduled interview to enrol in a Diploma of Beauty Therapy at another college. The entire process felt impersonal and from the moment the interview began I couldn’t help, but hear the song from Grease – “Beauty School Dropout” play over and over again in my head”! Thankfully when the interview came to an end I called my mum who could tell I was upset. The first thing she said was “If it’s not as great as you my sweet girl then they won’t ever see greatness or achieve greatness with you”. From that moment I knew I couldn’t settle for anything less than this greatness that my mum knew I had within me. Two weeks later and I found a special place that would align with my values of compassion and nurturing – The French Beauty Academy. A warm greeting, a kind tour, a friendly chat from the Student Advisors and just like that, my personal journey began. The French was going to be my place of greatness and it was going to take me great places.

What was your favourite part about studying at the French? How would you describe your experience from the day you started at orientation?

From the moment I arrived on my very first day I felt welcomed as a part of the French Family – a day that felt like sunshine in my heart. For me, The French was full of unforgettable experiences! The French embodies empowerment, a nurturing environment, determination and raw passion. Not only was I able to build lifetime bonds with my great cohort, I learnt the great art of kindness and was able nourish my mind with new knowledge each day.

How did the French help prepare you for life as a professional beauty therapist?

The French was my catalyst to self-belief, self-worth and it instilled in me a sense of ongoing determination and passion. A passion that enables me to deliver an unforgettable experience to every client I encounter. At The French I was able to discover my own perfect balance of professionalism whilst still maintaining uniqueness and authenticity as a Therapist.

Did you have a favourite teacher / subject at the french? Why?

I will never pick favourites because I valued each and every person I came across at the French. Dianne – who would assist in maintaining the rooms. David – who would help me when having a mini meltdown thinking I lost my assignment on my laptop! Kimberly – who would ask me how I was going every single day with a warm smile. Sometimes it’s the simple things that can make your experience so memorable. All of the Educators at The French delivered our course content with such enthusiasm and ensured everyone felt comfortable and confident with the skills that they were learning. I like to think of myself as a bit of a skin nerd now, so reflecting back on my subjects I would have to say Cosmetic Chemistry and Skin Anatomy & Physiology were my two biggest loves!

WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU RECEIVED FROM YOUR STUDY AT THE FRENCH?

“Do you, because you are good enough!!!” Before studying at The French I wasn’t often caught up in trying to be or act like someone else. Hand on heart – finding my own beauty and self worth was the game changer for me. I have learnt that you need to feel beautiful yourself to be able to gift the feeling of beauty to others.

WHAT WERE SOME OF THE INVALUABLE LESSONS OR MOST IMPORTANT THING THAT YOU LEARNT AT THE FRENCH THAT YOU HAVE BEEN ABLE TO APPLY TO YOUR NEW CAREER?

I think the most valuable lesson I learnt was The French philosophy: “Beauty therapy is defined by the desire to serve and care for others – to help clients overcome internal challenges, build self-esteem, restore energy and feel not just pampered, but nurtured.”
