From swapping a law degree for a life in beauty, to owning and operating her own skin clinic – MIM Face & Body, Jessica Bell’s journey is a powerful reminder of what happens when passion meets the right education. A Brisbane Campus Frenchie, Jessica has built a career grounded in professionalism, confidence, and genuine client care. Jess reflects on her time at The French, the friendships that shaped her, and how her love for skin led her to create a space where clients feel calm, cared for, and confident in their own skin.

I’ve always had a passion for beauty! I initially started studying law at university, but I quickly realised that my heart wasn’t in it. That turning point made me decide to follow what I truly loved, which led me to The French.
My biggest motivation to study at The French was my mum. She’s always encouraged me to learn from the best, and after doing some research together, we knew The French was the perfect place for me to start my beauty career.
I still remember my first day clearly, I was so nervous to meet the other girls! But it didn’t take long before we became close friends. Many of those friendships have lasted through the years, they were at my wedding and have celebrated all of life’s big moments with me.
One of my core memories from my time at The French is salon days! I was so nervous working on real, paying clients for the first time. If only I could’ve seen where I am now, how far I’ve come and how much confidence I’ve gained.I learnt that if I put my mind to something I can make it happen with hard work and determination.
I miss the sense of community the most. Being surrounded by supportive educators and like-minded classmates made it such a special place. The friendships, the energy, and the constant learning made every day feel exciting and meaningful.
Skin was definitely a standout for me. It really sparked my passion and set me on the path to eventually opening my own skin clinic. I also loved doing brows, which helped me build connections and led to opportunities working in other clinics. Those experiences were such an important part of my journey and growth in the industry.
The French really helped me build confidence, in myself and my abilities. I learned how to step outside my comfort zone, communicate professionally, and trust my instincts. It wasn’t just about beauty skills; it was about growing into the person and professional I am today.
Absolutely – one of the most invaluable lessons I learnt was the importance of professionalism and client care. The way you present yourself, treat clients, and carry yourself in the industry makes all the difference. That mindset has stayed with me throughout my career.
For me, it was quite smooth. I actually secured a job in a salon while I was still studying at The French. The training and hands-on experience gave me the skills and confidence to step straight into the industry. It really helped set me up for success early on.
I run my own skin clinic as a sole trader, so I handle everything – from treatments to bookings and managing supplies. Balancing work with being a mum to little ones keeps me on my toes, but I love the flexibility it gives me. Every day is busy and rewarding, especially when I see clients leave feeling confident and happy with their skin.
My favourite thing is seeing the transformation, not just in my clients’ skin, but in their confidence. Helping someone feel good about themselves is incredibly rewarding and makes all the hard work totally worth it.
I am loving watching skin needling treatments evolve, especially loving working with exosomes at the moment. It’s my favourite thing about the industry, it’s always changing so I never get bored!
Do it! You will thank yourself! Invest in good quality education, it puts you above the others and you enter the industry with so much more knowledge and experience.
My business is in the heart of my little hometown. I do most beauty treatments from waxing to intense skin treatments. My goal was to create a space that allowed my clients to feel comfortable and leave a little more confident in themselves after each appointment. I’ve always made relaxation my main goal with the salon and really try to focus on making sure every client can relax in their own way – some people need a chat and someone to vent too, and some love the silence and ambiance of a salon room and a comfy bed.
My journey started as an employee in another salon. I learnt so much and grew as a therapist and a person in this time. When my second baby was 4 months old the opportunity came up to purchase the salon and it was a no brainer. I had 2 weeks to change the name, make it perfect and get going!
My first steps were to make sure I could create a space that was relaxing and exactly the vibe I wanted so that I could ensure my clients felt calm and in a safe place. I also believe that social media, your website and your online presence is extremely important in today’s society – so I ensured that I worked really hard on making that the best I could.
The biggest challenge with starting my business was adjusting to being on my own. When you work in a salon, you’re always surrounded with support and someone to ask questions or to bounce ideas off. It took a couple of weeks to really trust my intuition with my treatments. I am also super grateful to have some incredible therapists who are my friends so I am always able to reach out to them if I have any questions. My advice is to grow your community and meet new people, because you always need the support of others in your business journey.
I always refer back to the professionalism that I learnt at the French. Grooming is important, customer service is important, service is important. As long as you are well presented, kind, caring and helpful – you will attract the right clients.
My plans for the future of my business are unknown! I’m excited to watch how it grows and the direction it takes me as I start to specialise in more of the treatments I’m truly passionate about. That’s the thing I love about beauty therapy, it’s ALWAYS evolving and there is always something new to learn.
My advice is: work for someone else first. Get your experience up, learn the ropes, learn what you would and wouldn’t do. And immerse yourself in the community. You need the support from other people in the same boat. Even if it takes all of your courage to turn up to events, just do it. You’ll thank yourself later.
