OUR FLAGSHIP BEAUTY THERAPY DIPLOMA

What sparked your interest in pursuing a career in beauty therapy? Was there a specific moment or experience that inspired you?

My passion for beauty started with makeup in 2012. I had studied and worked at Napoleon Perdis and thought I had found my thing.

I started to have dreams of having a booming at home business so I could start a family with my husband and still do what I love, but infertility struggles threw a spanner in the works for me and had me reassessing what I actually wanted to do.

I originally thought makeup would be my main service, but as I slowly added more qualifications to my portfolio, I started to realise I wanted to take a more in depth dive into the world of beauty and find out exactly where my niche was.

What was your main motivation to choose to study at The French Beauty Academy? What was it that drew you to study here?

I did a lot of research before deciding to attend The French Beauty Academy. I actually asked around with other beauticians who I knew were great to try and find out which school was going to be the best fit for me.

One beautician mentioned The French Beauty Academy and as soon as I started looking into it I knew it was exactly what I was looking for. Not only was the structure exactly what I wanted but the way the college presented itself and held value in how students presented themselves really was a stand out for me.

I wanted to study at a place that embodied every value I wanted my business to hold.

Do you remember your Orientation week? Can you share your experience or how you felt on those first few days/weeks.

In all honesty I remember feeling a little overwhelmed and wondering if I was truly capable of what was ahead. Those thought patterns quickly changed when I started to realise everyone in that room was just as nervous as I was. The teachers were so warm and welcoming that any previous doubt I had quickly dispersed.

Reflecting on your time at The French, can you share a standout moment or memory?

A stand out memory for me was walking up on the stage at graduation to actually receive my diploma. That might sound a bit cliche but my journey at the French wasn’t your average journey.

I hit the ground running when school started and every week had me wanting more and excited for what was to come. I then found out whilst studying that after experiencing infertility issues for years that I was pregnant and my due date was right when I was meant to be finishing up my final exams.

This was a miracle for my husband and I but at the same time I wondered if my career in beauty had ended before it had even truly begun.

I had amazing teachers rally around me and let me know that this would not stop me from completing my diploma if I did not let it.

Studying whilst pregnant is not ideal, but through that I experienced an unspoken French Beauty sisterhood of love and support which came not only from teachers but also class mates that had become some of my closest friends at that point in time.

So walking up on stage after doubting so many times if I would even make it there was a definite highlight for me.

What do you miss most about The French?

I miss the laughs. There was a time and a place to be serious and get things done but amongst that there were so many laughs and good times.

Did you have a favourite subject or Educator at The French? Why/What did you love most about it?

I had too many favourite educators, Lauren, Alana, Carleigh, just to name a few.

It was hard to have just one favourite subject when their love for the subject they were covering would just rub off on you.

My teachers were honestly the best and I couldn’t have asked for a better bunch of women to have been taught by.

In what ways did The French help you develop personally and professionally?

The French helped me set a standard for what type of beautician I wanted to be, how I wanted to hold myself and present myself. Being exposed to working in the student salon also gave me that real world experience which also helped boost my confidence prior to entering the industry.

Was there an invaluable lesson or any advice you received from The French that has stuck with you and continues to inspire you?

To work hard but to also be kind. My situation with being heavily pregnant during final exams could have been an annoyance for some. But I had beautiful teachers who not only pushed me to work hard but also worked with me to do my assessments during lunch breaks or outside of my class times, just so I could complete my diploma on time.

They didn’t have to do some of the things they did for me, but their kindness has truly stuck with me. Things that I know I have emulated in any leadership roles I have taken on personally and professionally since my days of study.

How easy was it for you to gain work after graduating? Tell me about your first career ‘break’ in beauty?

Even after finishing up I was having opportunities presented to me. I had spas reaching out and even a job offered to me immediately from the spa where I had done my placement.

How are French graduates perceived in the industry? Did your employer know who The French Beauty Academy was?

My employer and others that I interviewed with from large corporations to small sole trader businesses have all thought very highly of graduates from The French, even way out in Toowoomba. It appears to be well known and respected that we are trained to a very high industry standard.

With innovations and trends constantly evolving, what aspect of working in the beauty industry excites you the most right now?

Change can sometimes be scary but evolving with the industry is important. This constant change keeps things interesting, whether its the trial of new products or keeping up to date with new techniques, I find the industry definitely keeps things interesting.

For prospective students considering studying at The French Beauty Academy, what aspect of the program do you think sets a solid foundation for success in the industry?

One aspect of The French Beauty Academy program is that it sets a solid foundation for success in the beauty industry with its comprehensive curriculum covering both theoretical knowledge and hands-on practical experience. It provides students with a well-rounded program that equips you with the skills and expertise needed to thrive in various roles within the beauty industry. Additionally, the emphasis on industry-relevant training and real-world experiences, allows students to gain valuable insights and practical skills that are essential for success in such a competitive industry.

Looking ahead, what personal or professional goals are you aiming to achieve in the next few years? Is there a dream role or achievement you're working towards?

Looking ahead, my goal is to expand my client base and increase brand recognition within my community. I aim to offer a wider range of services and establish myself as a trusted authority in the brow community. Ultimately, I aspire to create a thriving and sustainable business that allows me to pursue my passion for beauty whilst providing exceptional service to my clients.

Can you please tell us a bit about your business?

My business is called Brow & Beauty Haven which specialises in Brow Mapping but also offers Brow Laminations, Lash Lifts and makeup services.

Why did you decide to start your own business? Can you tell us a bit about your journey?

Originally after completing my Diploma of Beauty Therapy I thought I wanted to open my own little day spa. My journey changed along the way when I fell in love with Brows and Brow Mapping. After 12 years doing makeup, completing my Diploma of Beauty therapy and having 3 kids, I decided to rebrand my business and officially open a salon at home and specialise in Brows.

I have continued to add to my qualifications and have a goal to expand my services within my business.

What were the first few steps you took to set up the business?

The first thing I did was get an ABN, register my business name and make sure I had the correct insurance to cover myself and my business. I also set up a google business profile and put myself on the map. I made it my goal to see as many people as possible to begin with and request they leave me a google review. Having good reviews and a lot of reviews will set you apart from the other businesses in your area that provide the same services.

What were some of the biggest challenges you faced when starting your business, and how did you overcome them?

Social media is a big part of the beauty world. I realised that the way I presented myself online needed to improve if I was going to succeed. I really struggled with keeping up with it all to begin with but by doing extra courses in social media training and practicing these skills I have gotten to a point where 80% of my clientele come from finding me on social media.

What is a decision or perhaps a mistake you've made that has lead to a very valuable lesson in running or starting a business?

Value yourself and your skills and do not let clients take advantage of you. It’s definitely right to be kind but it’s ok to be kind and have boundaries within your business.

What did you learn during your time at The French that helped prepare you when starting your business or during the course of your business journey?

The emphasis on presentation along with extensive hands on training and education gave me the confidence to step into a business owner role and know exactly the type of beautician I wanted to be.

If you had just 1 piece of advice for our Frenchies who are wanting to start their own business, what would it be?

Find your niche service and become the best you can at that. Never become stagnant either, trends, techniques and new products are forever being developed so keep up to date with what is new and continue to do courses to stay up to date with new techniques.

Why did you decide to start your own business? Can you tell us a bit about your journey?

The decision to start my own business was influenced by my many years of experience at LCA, where I had the privilege of working under the guidance of an incredible owner, Megan. She served as a massive inspiration to me and from the moment I met her, I aspired to become a Girl Boss like her. For years, I dedicated myself to honing my skills, gaining experience and learning the intricacies of the beauty industry. This journey was marked by countless hours of overtime, as I seized every opportunity to learn and grow. I worked tirelessly, embracing each challenge as a chance to develop my expertise and contribute to the success of the clinic. The commitment to continuous improvement and the willingness to take on extra responsibilities were integral parts of my journey.

Today, as the owner of my clinic, I am grateful for the journey that led me here.

What were the first few steps you took to set up the business?

The initial steps in setting up my business involved securing the right location, a process that proved surprisingly smooth. I consider myself lucky to have found the perfect spot on the second viewing, setting a positive tone for the venture. Following the location, the next significant step was organizing the fitout, a task that turned out to be a massive learning experience.

What were some of the biggest challenges you faced when starting your business, and how did you overcome them?

One of the major challenges in starting my business was the build. Given that I had never undertaken a project like this, navigating the complexities of coordinating trades, organizing builders and overseeing the entire construction process was a daunting task. The challenge was compounded by not having a comprehensive understanding of what was involved, I was very fortunate and lucky to have family in this field and a lot of help along the way. To overcome this hurdle, despite my lack of prior experience, I took on the responsibility of doing most of the design myself, ensuring that my vision for the clinic was translated into the physical space. This not only allowed me to be intimately involved in the creative process but also empowered me with a deeper understanding of the construction aspects. Collaborating closely with the builders and trades, seeking advice when needed which again I was very lucky to have a lot of help from family and friends in the process. While the journey presented a steep learning curve, overcoming this challenge reinforced my resilience and determination, ultimately contributing to the successful realization of my business vision.

What is a decision or perhaps a mistake you've made that has lead to a very valuable lesson in running or starting a business?

I’ve been fortunate not to encounter major mistakes, but a valuable lesson I’ve learned is the responsibility of taking accountability. In the world of business, nothing is handed to you; everything happens when you take the initiative and make it happen. This lesson has underscored the importance of proactivity, determination, and a hands-on approach in achieving success in entrepreneurship.

What did you learn during your time at The French that helped prepare you when starting your business or during the course of your business journey?

The comprehensive education and hands-on training equipped me with the technical skills essential for the beauty industry. This preparation not only boosted my confidence but also allowed me to seamlessly transition into the operational aspects of my own business.

What are your plans for the future of your business, do you have an ultimate business goal?

My future for the business involves expanding its footprint by opening the next location, creating a network of fully operating clinics. In five years, I envision myself overseeing a thriving beauty enterprise with a dedicated team. The goal is not only to provide exceptional services but also to establish a brand known for professionalism and client satisfaction. This expansion will not only amplify the reach of my business but also contribute to the growth and success of the beauty clinics I aspire to lead.

What sparked your interest in pursuing a career in beauty therapy? Was there a specific moment or experience that inspired you?

My passion for a career in beauty therapy was ignited by my dedicated Beauty Therapist, Lygia Matkovcik. With three decades of expertise, Lygia has been my skincare guide for years. Each appointment with her is a transformative experience, leaving me empowered, relaxed, and rejuvenated.

As a mother and wife, my visits to Lygia became an indispensable source of self-care. I emerged from her care not only with radiant skin but with a renewed spirit, ready to face any challenge that lay ahead.

I aim to gift others the empowerment and luxury I experienced in her skilled hands. Just as she made me feel like a million dollars, my mission is to share that joy and confidence with those I have the privilege to care for in the future.

What was your main motivation to choose to study at The French Beauty Academy? What was it that drew you to study here?

In my search for the ideal beauty academy in Brisbane, I carefully weighed key factors – location, experience, teachers, vibe, and cost.

Location: The French Beauty Academy’s central position offered unparalleled convenience.

Experience: Renowned for excellence, its extensive track record assured a top-tier educational experience.

Teachers: The academy’s expert faculty underscored a commitment to student success.

Vibe: From the aesthetically pleasing space to the warm reception, The French Beauty Academy felt like a welcoming and belonging environment.

Cost: Striking a balance between quality and affordability, the academy’s fees aligned with my investment goals.

In choosing The French Beauty Academy, I was confident in a holistic educational journey that exceeded my expectations.

Do you remember your Orientation week? Can you share your experience or how you felt on those first few days/weeks.

Orientation Week remains a vivid memory—a mix of excitement and nervous anticipation marking the beginning of our transformative journey at the academy.

The week commenced with lively get-to-know-you games, breaking the ice and fostering connections among students. We explored every corner of the academy, including the unforgettable descent down seemingly endless fire escape stairs from the twelfth floor—each step echoing our shared nerves and eagerness for the journey ahead.

The teachers, with their welcoming spa voices, guided us through those early days, providing insights and explanations about the upcoming course year. Their support gradually dispelled the uncertainties lingering in our minds.

As the initial weeks unfolded, shared nerves transformed into shared excitement and friendships, lost lasting ones. Orientation Week laid the foundation for friendships that would define our academic journey. Despite the seemingly endless fire escape stairs, they symbolized the ascent into a year of growth, learning, and shared experiences.

Reflecting on your time at The French, can you share a standout moment or memory?

Reflecting on my time at The French Beauty Academy stirs up a mix of memories—some delightful, others challenging, and a few comical. One standout feature was our chance to pamper each other, leading to moments of joy, occasional tears, happy tears and painful tears (getting waxing hurts).

Mastering facial massage steps became a dedicated ritual, practiced at home on willing (and some initially unwilling) friends and family. The learning curve was steep, but our commitment to perfecting our craft made the journey both memorable and rewarding.

Encountering each other without makeup early on was a nerve-wracking yet beautiful testament to the bond forged over time. By the course’s end, the initial discomfort transformed into comfort in our own skin in front of each other.

Gratitude for The French Beauty Academy runs deep. The opportunities provided have been pivotal in shaping not just a beauty therapist but a resilient and skilled professional.

What do you miss most about The French?

What I miss most about The French Beauty Academy is the genuine connection with the teachers and the warmth of the reception staff. The educators, with their candid sharing of industry experiences, brought authenticity to our learning journey. Their commitment to infusing fun into theory classes made every session engaging and memorable.

The bond with the reception team added a comforting layer to the academy experience. Their welcoming smiles and genuine interest in our well-being created a sense of belonging beyond the classroom.

The educators’ honesty about the industry realities resonated deeply, offering insights beyond textbooks. Their dedication to enjoyable learning not only enhanced our understanding but also ignited a passion for the craft.

The friendships among teachers and students created a nurturing environment where growth flourished. The supportive ecosystem of The French Beauty Academy remains a cherished memory, leaving an indelible mark on my journey as a beauty therapist.

Did you have a favourite subject or Educator at The French? Why/What did you love most about it?

Engulfed in the entirety of The French Beauty Academy’s curriculum, I can genuinely say that every subject held a special place in my heart. My commitment to becoming an exceptional therapist fueled my eagerness to learn, positioning me at the front table, ready for every lesson. Assessments were tackled with enthusiasm, and any spare moment translated into extra study.

Choosing a favorite educator is akin to picking a cherished chapter in a beloved book – challenging, as each one left an indelible mark on my journey. Amy’s wisdom about prioritizing client comfort and communication resonated deeply, instilling a sense of responsibility in our practice. Kerry’s unwavering emphasis on self-care served as a constant reminder to nurture our own well-being amidst the demands of the industry.

Kelly’s mastery in massage elevated my passion for the art, her guidance imprinting on my technique. Alex’s patient and calming approach to waxing transformed what could be a daunting skill into a therapeutic practice. Jordan, not just a makeup maestro but also our Trivia Queen, brought a vibrant energy to every session.

Amanda’s profound knowledge of nails added a layer of expertise to my skill set, while Emma’s lively spirit endured even through repetitive presentations. Every educator and staff member, from the welcoming faces at the lift to the classroom mentors. The diverse teaching styles enriched my learning experience, leaving me with a profound appreciation for the collective wisdom of The French Beauty Academy’s educators.

Each one contributed to shaping not just my skills but also my outlook as a beauty therapist.

In what ways did The French help you develop personally and professionally?

The French Beauty Academy has been instrumental in both my personal and professional development. The focus on Service Excellence in the course has significantly contributed to my growth.

On a personal level, the academy enhanced my confidence and communication skills, preparing me to adapt to various client needs and handle challenges gracefully.

Professionally, The French Beauty Academy provided top-notch education and hands-on experience, ensuring I entered the beauty industry as a skilled and confident practitioner. The emphasis on Service Excellence has become a guiding principle, shaping my commitment to exceeding client expectations.

Was there an invaluable lesson or any advice you received from The French that has stuck with you and continues to inspire you?

Absolutely, one invaluable lesson from The French that continues to resonate with me is the importance of saying “no” to clients when necessary. The emphasis on our duty of care has become a guiding principle in my practice.

Understanding that certain treatments may do more harm than good for a client’s skin is a crucial aspect of responsible and ethical beauty therapy. The lesson instilled by The French in recognizing the limits of treatments and having the courage to decline when necessary has been a cornerstone of my professional ethos.

This advice serves as a constant reminder that our primary responsibility as beauty therapists is the well-being of our clients. It reinforces the significance of ethical decision-making and the integrity required in delivering safe and beneficial treatments. This lesson has not only enhanced my professional competence but also deepened my commitment to providing services that prioritise the health and satisfaction of those in my care.

How easy was it for you to gain work after graduating? Tell me about your first career ‘break’ in beauty?

Securing work after graduating was a smooth transition for me, thanks to careful planning and determination. Interestingly, I had already committed to creating a home salon before even enrolling in the course. With renovations paperwork for the home salon already in place, I arranged insurance and prepared the space for operation. It was a seamless transition from student to practitioner, as I was able to immediately put my newfound skills into practice.

The decision to establish a home salon provided me with the flexibility and independence to kickstart my career in beauty therapy on my terms. It allowed me to create a welcoming and comfortable environment for clients while embarking on this exciting journey as a beauty therapist.

I’m most excited about the beauty industry’s shift towards natural anti-aging methods, like buccal facials. While machines offer incredible advancements, I’m drawn to the emphasis on human touch.

The trend towards holistic and natural approaches aligns with a broader well-being movement. Buccal facials highlight the transformative effects of manual techniques, showcasing the skill of beauty therapists in promoting skin health.

This shift reflects a deeper understanding of beauty as a holistic concept, acknowledging the connection between physical touch and overall well-being. Being part of an industry that embraces both innovation and the timeless effectiveness of human touch is truly exciting.

For prospective students considering studying at The French Beauty Academy, what aspect of the program do you think sets a solid foundation for success in the industry?

Prospective students, The French Beauty Academy’s key to success is the unwavering support from teachers and educators. Don’t hesitate to seek guidance—it’s not just encouraged but essential for your growth. The academy’s supportive environment ensures you gain technical expertise and develop the confidence and skills needed for a thriving beauty industry career.

Looking ahead, what personal or professional goals are you aiming to achieve in the next few years? Is there a dream role or achievement you're working towards?

My main goal is to build a thriving business at Naturally Best Beauty, offering exceptional beauty services with a holistic wellness approach. I aim to create a space where clients not only undergo outer beauty transformations but also experience profound well-being.

My professional journey is fueled by the desire to establish a haven where beauty and wellness intersect, leaving a lasting impact on the lives of those I have the privilege to serve.

Can you please tell us a bit about your business?

My main goal is to build a thriving business at Naturally Best Beauty, offering exceptional beauty services with a holistic wellness approach. I aim to create a space where clients not only undergo outer beauty transformations but also experience profound well-being.

My professional journey is fueled by the desire to establish a haven where beauty and wellness intersect, leaving a lasting impact on the lives of those I have the privilege to serve.

Can you please tell us a bit about your business?

The business is called Naturally Best Beauty and we are located in Dakabin, North Brisbane. The Business’ motto is simple: Be Welcomed, Be Pampered, and Be Yourself. Come and experience it yourself! Or check us out on Socials!

Why did you decide to start your own business? Can you tell us a bit about your journey?

I’ve always enjoyed self-care and pampering others. I started with nails and lash extensions but felt a desire to do more, particularly in helping people with skin conditions. Having reactive skin and allergies myself, I understand the challenges. One day, a family member encouraged me to pursue what I love. After discussing it with my husband, we decided to renovate our home for a salon and for me to go back to school. Grateful for his support, he adjusted his work schedule for our kids’ school routines. Builders helped turn my dream into reality.

What were the first few steps you took to set up the business?

Had a chat with hubby and the kids, registered the business name, set up socials. After signing the paperwork for renovations, the crucial choice of Beauty Academy followed. The less exciting parts like insurances and procedures had to be sorted, along with deciding on salon brands. Building the website and having fun with décor and color schemes added a touch of excitement to the process.

What were some of the biggest challenges you faced when starting your business, and how did you overcome them?

Self-doubt crept in: Can I run a business, something I’ve never done before? Can I truly provide the best service to my clients? How do I balance a successful business with a family? Despite the uncertainty, my dedication is unwavering—10000%! Hubby emphasized stepping out of my comfort zone, committing only if I’m ready. Grateful for the support, I have beautiful mentors guiding me through this journey.

What is a decision or perhaps a mistake you've made that has lead to a very valuable lesson in running or starting a business?

Mistakes happen—don’t let them hold you back! Remind yourself that you are good enough and capable. Initially, I hesitated to start seeing clients until the space matched my vision. However, my first clients didn’t mind if things weren’t perfect. There were leaks when it rained, and the builders efficiently fixed them. We even had an internal waterfall initially, but we rode it out. It’s a reminder that imperfections happen, and sometimes, you just have to navigate through them.

What did you learn during your time at The French that helped prepare you when starting your business or during the course of your business journey?

All the theory work and got to experience and treat some great clients under the guidance of the teachers! If I was unsure of how to treat or what to recommend, I could just ask the teachers to help me with product knowledge/treatment anything.

Additionally, I had the chance to meet and experience some fantastic companies in the beauty industry. Attending seminars and workshops provided valuable insights and further enriched my learning journey.

What are your plans for the future of your business, do you have an ultimate business goal?

In the next few years, I aim to expand my services, introducing innovative beauty and wellness offerings that align with the evolving needs of my clients. This may include incorporating new techniques, staying in line of industry trends, and furthering my education to provide cutting-edge services.

My dream role is to be a beacon of well-being in the community, known for delivering not just beauty treatments but a comprehensive wellness experience. This involves fostering meaningful connections with clients, understanding their individual needs, and tailoring services that contribute to their overall health and happiness.

Step 1 of 3

In the intricate tapestry of life, sometimes our true calling reveals itself not in a single moment, but through a series of experiences that shape our path. Meet Amanda, a remarkable Alumni whose journey into the world of beauty therapy is a testament to the transformative power of passion and purpose.

Amanda’s fascination with the beauty industry was sparked in childhood, initially drawn to the artistry of makeup for media and theatre. Despite starting nursing studies, Amanda felt a disconnection, leading her to explore business and finance. However, a pivotal experience in the skin cancer sector reignited her passion, driving her towards a career focused on helping others feel confident and empowered.

OUR FLAGSHIP BEAUTY THERAPY DIPLOMA

What sparked your interest in pursuing a career in beauty therapy? Was there a specific moment or experience that inspired you?

My passion for the beauty industry ignited during childhood, initially drawn to makeup artistry, specifically for media and backstage theatre. Although I started nursing studies, the content felt disconnected, leading me to withdraw and organically progress towards a career in business and finance. However, a pivotal experience working in the skin cancer sector reignited my passion and sparked the realisation that I was still not settled with where my career had taken me. Although I love both business and finance, having exposure to the devastating impact of skin cancer inspired me to pursue beauty therapy, driven by a desire to help others feel confident in their appearance, whether for aesthetic reasons or post-trauma.

What was your main motivation to choose to study at The French Beauty Academy? What was it that drew you to study here?

As a mature age student, I was driven to ensure that my training would be recognised as sought after by industry professionals, allowing me to excel without limitations. The French Beauty Academy initially caught my attention for its industry recognition. However, it was during my tour with Demi that I was truly drawn in by the academy’s supportive atmosphere, visually stunning campus and opportunity to experience and explore additional modalities and treatments unavailable elsewhere.

Do you remember your Orientation week? Can you share your experience or how you felt on those first few days/weeks.

Orientation week was such a whirlwind of emotions for me. The daily commute from Toowoomba to Brisbane was certainly a challenge, and it didn’t take long for the exhaustion to catch up with me. Those first few weeks were all about adjusting to a new routine, a new environment, and new expectations.

But orientation provided a gentle transition into this new chapter. As an introvert, I found immense value in the opportunity to meet my cohort and begin forming connections before the real work began.

Reflecting on your time at The French, can you share a standout moment or memory?

That moment of pride when I first donned The French uniform. It symbolised the beginning of something truly special, a journey of growth and discovery.

What do you miss most about The French?

What I miss most about The French is undoubtedly the support and guidance of the teachers and staff. Their wealth of knowledge and passion made each day an inspiring experience. Whether it was seeking advice on academics, the industry or life in general, their guidance was invaluable. They created such a nurturing environment.

Did you have a favourite subject or Educator at The French? Why/What did you love most about it?

At The French, I found myself drawn to the salon management subjects, anatomy, and specialised facials. The depth of theory in each of these areas fascinated me; I thrived on understanding the intricacies behind these practices, the human body and different modalities used in salon. However, singling out a favourite educator is a challenge. Each instructor brought their own unique perspective and expertise to the table. It didn’t take long to learn their individual quirks and I came to appreciate how their diverse experiences and backgrounds moulded my learning and the way they taught. Their teachings have undoubtedly shaped my career, providing me with invaluable insights that I continue to apply today.

In what ways did The French help you develop personally and professionally?

The incorporation of the Service Excellence Program I feel was pivotal to my growth whilst studying. Initially, I underestimated its significance, but as I progressed through the program, I began to recognise changes in myself such as confidence, professionalism, compassion and effective communication. I believe this came directly from these learnings and have become an integral part of my personal and professional development.

Was there an invaluable lesson or any advice you received from The French that has stuck with you and continues to inspire you?

One invaluable lesson I received from The French Beauty Academy that continues to inspire me is the importance of continuous learning and self-improvement. The academy emphasised that the beauty industry is constantly evolving, and to stay relevant and excel in my career, I must always be open to learning new techniques, staying updated on industry trends, and refining my skills. This advice has stuck with me because it highlights the significance of adaptability and growth mindset in any profession. It is a constant reminder to remain curious, seek out opportunities for further education and development, and never become complacent in my journey toward excellence.

How easy was it for you to gain work after graduating? Tell me about your first career ‘break’ in beauty?

I was fortunate to secure a job in a salon environment while still studying, beginning my journey in the beauty industry shortly after starting my program in January. By May, I had secured a position where my employer was incredibly supportive of my studies, allowing me to balance work, learning and family. Through dedication and a hunger for knowledge, I quickly progressed to advanced treatments like chemical peels and skin needling, earning my Skin Care Specialist certificate by October. Post-graduation, I smoothly transitioned into a full-time role at the salon, where I still work, continually growing and thriving in my career as a Skin Specialist.

What excites me the most right now in the beauty industry is the merging of science, technology, and wellness. Breakthroughs in skincare treatments and formulations driven by advancements in science and technology are intriguing. Additionally, the industry’s growing emphasis on holistic health, encompassing not just skin but also body and mind wellness, is exciting. This holistic approach is fostering a new generation of individuals who are increasingly conscious about their skin’s health and are open to learning and embracing all things skin.

For prospective students considering studying at The French Beauty Academy, what aspect of the program do you think sets a solid foundation for success in the industry?

The personal and professional development nurtured by The French Beauty Academy’s Service Excellence program is unparalleled. Graduates emerge into the workforce equipped with the grace and skills to tackle any challenge in the industry. Furthermore, the academy’s well known and respected reputation provides students with an advantage, positioning them ahead of their peers in the competitive beauty sector.

Looking ahead, what personal or professional goals are you aiming to achieve in the next few years? Is there a dream role or achievement you're working towards?

In the next few years, I am focused on advancing my education. This year I have commenced an Associate Degree in Dermal Therapy through the Australiasian College of Health & Wellness, where upon completion I hope to commence my bachelor, and undertake a postgraduate course in dermoscopy. Ultimately, I aspire to secure a position in dermal therapies, or ideally, establish my own aesthetics clinic, merging my passion for both business and aesthetics industries.

OUR FLAGSHIP BEAUTY THERAPY DIPLOMA

What motivated you to pursue a career in beauty therapy?

Growing up, I was always fascinated by the transformative power of beauty treatments and how they could boost a person’s confidence. My passion for skincare and makeup led me to explore various techniques and products, which eventually inspired me to pursue a career as a dermal clinician. I realised that this profession would allow me to combine my love for helping others with my interest in the beauty industry. The opportunity to make clients feel good about themselves while enhancing their natural features truly motivates me and makes being a skin therapist a fulfilling career choice.

What was your main motivation for studying at the French?

To follow my passion, I wanted to study at the best institution, The French Beauty Academy. The Campus offers modern facilities, experienced instructors, and a supportive environment for aspiring skin professionals. All my educators and fellow peers became a family!

What was your favourite part about studying at the French? How would you describe your experience from the day you started at orientation?

My favourite part about studying at The French was just being on campus, it felt like home. I absolutely loved my educators, my principal, vice principal and friends. It was the best decision in my life, giving me an experience that I’ll cherish forever. My first day I was full of excitement, but also nervous. I remained focused during my time at The French and always aimed to help others and volunteer when I could.

How did the French help prepare you for life as a professional beauty therapist?

At The French everything is incredible, the amazing educators, who are the spine of the academy, with their professionalism and experience in their fields, learning from them was a blessing. The thorough teachings from the educators, for example, explaining the science behind the treatments and techniques. This knowledge gave me wings to fly high and achieve all my dreams!

Did you have a favourite teacher / subject at the french? Why?

Each of the educators at The French were truly amazing and inspiring and I can’t say that enough. Their guidance and dedication towards teaching, helped me to achieve my dreams. I can’t thank Kerry, Brooke and Nas enough for being my amazing educators, they helped me immensely to achieve and accomplish my diploma seamlessly.

What is the best advice you received from your study at the French?

Nothing is impossible, everything can be achieved, all you need is patience, ambition, dedication, and perseverance.

What are some of the invaluable lessons or most important things that you learnt at the french that you have been able to apply to your new career?

To be resilient in achieving your goals. You will come across hurdles in your journey, but all you truly need is ONE reason to achieve that goal, telling yourself ‘Yes, I can do it and I will do it no matter what!’ will help.

This advice stuck with me, and I feel it’s one of the invaluable lessons I’ve learnt.

How easy was it for you to gain work after graduating? Tell me about your first career ‘break’?

I would say, it was very easy for me. I had my first job before I graduated and it was at the biggest clinic in Australia, Clear Skincare Clinic as a Dermal and Laser Therapist. I always wanted to work in a clinic environment, with doctors and nurses, studying at The French helped me achieve this goal.

What elements of your study allowed you to obtain your new job? Were there any specific skills that you learned from your time at The French that you then highlighted in order to be hired?

The depth and thoroughness of the Diploma helped me learn all the essentials required to become a skin therapist. We studied the anatomy of the human body, bones, skin, health, diet, at one point I felt I was studying to become a doctor.

Although it was intense, it helped me gain a solid foundation of knowledge about skin, in return helping me get the interview at Clear Skincare Clinic.

How are The French graduates perceived out in the industry?

The French Beauty Academy is well known for its high standards and professionalism. All the businesses in our industry are very much aware of The French Beauty Academy and the ‘Frenchies’. Frenchies are very well groomed and charming, making them more approachable and stand out for hire.

Describe a day in the life of you at work…

A day in my life as a dermal and laser clinician typically involves assessing and treating various skin conditions. I start by reviewing client records and conducting consultations to understand specific skin concerns. Treatment procedures may include chemical peels, microdermabrasion, advanced skin treatments or laser therapy.

I also educate my clients on skincare routines and recommend appropriate products.

I’m also continuously learning about new skincare technologies and staying updated on industry trends which is essential as a dermal clinician.

Why is it so exciting to work within the beauty industry right now?

Firstly, there’s a growing emphasis on inclusivity, diversity, and sustainability, leading to innovative products and practices. Advances in skincare technology and a focus on holistic well-being, contributing to dynamic opportunities.

Social media has played a significant role, allowing professionals to showcase their work, connect with clients, and stay updated on trends about beauty and wellness.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO STUDENTS WHO ARE WANTING TO STUDY A BEAUTY THERAPY DIPLOMA AT THE FRENCH BEAUTY ACADEMY?

Ultimately, pursuing a Diploma in Beauty Therapy requires dedication, a love for the craft, and a commitment to ongoing learning and development. In saying this, I would advise students to network and make the most of The French industry connections, work on communicating effectively when dealing with clients and finally, choosing a program that offers a well-rounded education.

What are your goals for the next few years? Do you have an ultimate career ambition?

As a dermal clinician, I have some short-term and long-term goals which include, continuing my education to stay up to date with trends and technology, pursuing specialised certifications, expand and retain my customer base, collaborate with other healthcare professionals, and achieve recognition in the industry.

Maria wanted to prove the stigma around beauty therapy wrong! Maria’s drive secured her employment before graduating from The French in 2023.

Today, Maria is working at Heavenly Spa by Westin, as a Spa Host and Therapist, where she continues to grow both personally and professionally. Read on to be inspired by a young woman who didn’t let societal stereotypes come in the way of her dreams.

OUR FLAGSHIP BEAUTY THERAPY DIPLOMA

What motivated you to pursue a career in beauty therapy?

My main motivation was my mother who also became a beauty therapist, seeing how much effort she put into her studies and how much joy it brought her by being able to help people feel comfortable and relaxed in their own skin inspired me. Another motivator to pursue this career was wanting change, a change that allowed me to give back to people by helping them. Proving to others that this is in fact an amazing industry to get into and that beauty can take you to so many different places.

What was your main motivation for studying at the French?

The seed of doubt when it comes to studying beauty is common, with thoughts such as, ‘will this take me far?’, ‘Is this worth it?’, whether these thoughts come from people around you or yourself. It is worth it, and it can take you so far.

What was your favourite part about studying at the French? How would you describe your experience from the day you started at orientation?

My favourite part was the hands-on approach that was delivered by the French, in professional salon-based environments.

From the very first day of orientation, I felt the support and guidance needed to complete this course, as well as the motivation I needed to prove that I could do this. From orientation to graduation, you have educators motivating you all the way.

How did the French help prepare you for life as a professional beauty therapist?

The French prepared me in the sense that it doesn’t matter if a client is paying $10-$15 for a treatment or paying $1,000; everyone is deserving of the best quality and care.

The French taught us how to hold ourselves to a high standard when it comes to client treatments and our self-presentation.

Did you have a favourite teacher / subject at the french? Why?

I would have to say Alex Owens for facials, specialised facials, and waxing. Alex helped me feel confident in my own abilities by allowing me the opportunity to perform treatments without any pressure, but instead with support and words of encouragement.

What is the best advice you received from your study at the French?

“You are in a learning environment; it is ok to make mistakes”. This was said many times by many educators, and it really helped my peers and I to get out of our comfort zones and try new things.

How easy was it for you to gain work after graduating? Tell me about your first career ‘break’?

With persistence and support from my educators and cohort, I was able to secure both placement and employment with the company I am currently with. Being a “Frenchie” helped immensely, employers in the industry are aware of the reputation of The French graduates.

What elements of your study allowed you to obtain your new job? Were there any specific skills that you learned from your time at The French that you then highlighted in order to be hired?

Making use of the service excellence units and being encouraged to implement this knowledge into our everyday lives (not just when with clients) has helped. I’ve become more empathetic and emotionally intelligent when interacting with new clients and team members due to my newfound confidence and ‘team player’ abilities.

How are The French graduates perceived out in the industry?

We are perceived as professional, hard workers.

Describe a day in the life of you at work…

My day begins by opening the spa and setting up a relaxing space for clients before they enter, I turn on everyone’s favourite spaceship steam room. I then greet my clients at reception and welcome them to their time of relaxation at the spa.

Why is it so exciting to work within the beauty industry right now?

The technological advancements and the high quality of education given at The French allow you to explore so many different fields of the industry, medical, science, as well as the holistic and management side. With this ever-growing industry there is always room to better oneself.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO STUDENTS WHO ARE WANTING TO STUDY A BEAUTY THERAPY DIPLOMA AT THE FRENCH BEAUTY ACADEMY?

Gather as much information as you can about The French and what it stands for as this will help you learn about yourself and where you want to go in life.

Always remember that the educators on campus are there to help you through anything! It is a year of invaluable learning and experience.

What are your goals for the next few years? Do you have an ultimate career ambition?

My ultimate goal is to own a business with my mum. We want to offer fantastic services to clients as well as offer opportunities to students looming for placement while they are studying.

I was very lucky to have been employed before graduating. It has been an amazing opportunity to grow my skillset as a therapist and I must thank The French for it.

ENQUIRE NOW FOR 2024

Step 1 of 3

Amanda’s career started in Government working in a role that left her unsatisfied. Picking up weekend work as a hair and makeup artist, this allowed her to still pursue her love for beauty and she later discovered her passion was skin!

Amanda’s time at The French Beauty Academy ‘saved’ her and she gives credit to The French educators for her knowledge and skills. Amanda is a highly motivated, determined women who manages mum-life and business with equal dedication. Her business, La Dar allows her the freedom to work flexibly, enabling more time out of the clinic and with her baby.

What motivated you to pursue a career in beauty therapy?

I worked in Government as a Safety Auditor, and I wasn’t happy in my job. I was also pursuing a career as a hair and makeup artist and did that as a side hustle. Whilst working as a HMUA I noticed it was hard to create a beautiful flawless look if the client had not been taking care of their skin. I would end up doing a lot of skin prep on the day of their events. At the end of the day, I really wanted to empower people to look beautiful and feel confident in their skin without covering it with too much makeup. I also wanted to have more confidence around being able to do manicures on set.

What was your main motivation for studying at the French?

I had looked around at a few schools when researching to do manicure and facial courses but didn’t pursue anything. When I decided to go to The French I was going through a tough time in my life. I received a run of the mill marketing text from The French to say that the Government changes were about to take effect and it was our last chance to enroll before the change. In that moment it felt like the right path to take, a couple of days later I was at The French Orientation Day. In hindsight I didn’t have a ‘main motivator’ to study at The French, but The French saved me, and I think it’s amazing how one random marketing text completely changed my life.

What was your favourite part about studying at the French? How would you describe your experience from the day you started at orientation?

Orientation Day I was all over the shop, I didn’t really know what I was doing! I clearly didn’t pay close attention to the emails sent because I turned up in normal clothes and everyone else was in black lol! So, I started at The French a little confused and lost – I was almost 30 years old, you’d think I’d have it together!

I was nervous going to campus as a flexi-girl (online and offline student) for the first time. In fact, since Orientation Day, I hadn’t been onto campus for 8 months! It wasn’t until I got a call asking if I was going to come to class that I booked in for my first prac and course. My nerves were completely gone once I arrived as I quickly realised my class was filled with people of all ages! I was scared I was going to be the oldest there. My peers were so nice, friendly and were the reason I fell in love with The French.

My first week back I had a model come in for a student salon treatment and this is where everything changed for me. I started my consultation and asked my client questions whilst assessing her skin. I asked her if she wore sunscreen and she told me she wore it every day, she then mentioned her brother had a sunspot on his arm and she was urging him for weeks to go and get it checked. After months her brother got the spot checked and the results stated it was a melanoma. Sadly, he passed away a few weeks later. I continued the women’s treatments and tried my best to make her feel as special and loved as possible. I spoke with Tenielle (an educator at the time) and learnt that what I was doing in treatments was changing and impacting someone’s life – I wasn’t just performing a service, but I was given the honor of someone else’s time, to take care of them.

Throughout the rest of my time studying, I took this experience with me. Turns out I hated doing manicures and fell in love with massage and facials instead!

I fell in love with the people at The French (one of the therapists I studied with at The French is now my Salon Coordinator). I fell in love with what I could do for someone else. I went in thinking I was just going to learn one thing and just add it to my repertoire, and I came out with more confidence, ambition, direction, and a newfound passion that I had no idea I had or was going to have.

How did the French help prepare you for life as a professional beauty therapist?

It gave me the foundation skillset and knowledge to go on and continue my studies and also start my business.

Did you have a favourite teacher / subject at the french? Why?

Tenielle for Facials and Lisa for Massage. Tenielle was amazing because she was so thorough, and it was all about the detail with her. From how you position your Maggi lamp in the room to how you put a face mask on a client so they can have the ultimate experience.

Lisa was great when it came to massage. She had what I call “The Touch”, something you cannot teach, and it is something I seemed to have had as well (I believe my mum passed it on to me as she studied beauty therapy and never pursued a career, but massage was her specialty and what she was good at). If you paid attention and listened closely to the things Lisa said, especially when it came to how she put oil on the skin and how she transitioned between moves, it benefitted you as a therapist.

Between Tenielle and Lisa I believe they gave me the foundations for what set me apart as a therapist because of the detail, transitions, and flow that I use in between movements and modalities. They both taught me that a massage or facial isn’t just a service, it’s an experience.

Towards the end of my studies, I had my final prac in the student spa and I invited Sherelle French to come and get a treatment from me. I gave her a full body Swedish massage and a classic facial. At the end she congratulated me and told me that it was one of the best massages she’s ever had and the best facial massage she had ever had. She then asked who taught me and I said Lisa and Tenielle and she sent them both an email saying how impressed she was with her treatment (I only know because they later shared it with me). I attribute my success to both these teachers because when you get a compliment like that from someone like Sherelle French then you know you must be on to something. I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for Lisa and Tenielle, they made me a better therapist and even though I am a Dermal Clinician now, I am sought after for my relaxation and advanced facial massage treatments.

What is the best advice you received from your study at the French?

I wouldn’t say there was one piece of advice that stood out for me. It was mainly my experience at The French overall.

What were some of the invaluable lessons or most important thing that you learnt at The French that you have been able to apply to your new career?

Excluding the techniques and the skills that my teachers gave me, it’s learning that what I am doing is more than just a treatment, its more than just massaging someone’s face, its more than fixing someone’s acne or correcting a skin condition. What I learnt is that I am making an impact on someone’s life, I am making someone feel special, loved, relaxed, more confident, and beautiful.

I also learnt to love myself and work on my own mental health more. The program was called Service Excellence. I learnt how important mindset is and to be honest I still do a lot of mindset work today.

How easy was it for you to gain work after graduating? Tell me about your first career ‘break’?

I had work as a makeup artist and worked on set, but after graduating I had a passion to start my own business and so I did. When I started my business, I only did Swedish Massage one day a week (on a Sunday), working around my full-time work schedule in the Government while also doing weddings on a Saturday.

What elements of your study allowed you to obtain your new job? Were there any specific skills that you learned from your time at The French that you then highlighted in order to be hired?

When I really pursued my work in the industry outside of the HMUA work I did, I was my own boss, but my massage skillset I took from The French was a huge part in the makings of my business.

How are The French graduates perceived out in the industry?

The French graduates are highly regarded and employable in the industry.

Describe a day in the life of you at work…

Now I am trying to navigate being a boss, a therapist, and a new mum all at the same time. Since becoming a new mum I have taken on more of a leadership role so my day to day has changed. Some days I am working on clients, others will be staff training days, staff meetings, admin work, which includes a lot of marketing, financials, product meetings and research.

Why is it so exciting to work within the beauty industry right now?

This industry is so diverse. You can be a therapist, working with different technologies, do editorial work, become an educator, own your own business, be a researcher, develop products…. the list goes on. The world is your oyster in the beauty industry, you have so many opportunities, you are not just locked down to one job.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO STUDENTS WHO ARE WANTING TO STUDY A BEAUTY THERAPY DIPLOMA AT THE FRENCH BEAUTY ACADEMY?

Don’t go in with expectations. Don’t go in thinking that the stereotype of being a beauty therapist is just doing treatments. Keep an open mind and you will open a door for yourself to endless opportunities.

What are your goals for the next few years? Do you have an ultimate career ambition?

To expand and grow my business to also include more wellness and nutrition practices as I am currently studying a degree in Clinical Nutrition. More international educational training. I would also love to open a second clinic and hire more staff.

“Just start, don’t wait for everything to be perfect. Just start, start small and then grow from there.”

- Amanda Beckman

Why did you decide to start your own business? Can you tell us a bit about your journey?

Because I wasn’t happy in my government job, and I wanted to have a more creative job as my side hustle to balance it out.

My side hustle then led me to a point where I was able to leave my full-time job. This did take years of hard work because I didn’t want to leave my job until I knew I could replace my wage with my beauty business. The Covid pandemic made the industry too unstable to just jump and take the risk, I had to be more strategic with my exit to then go on to grow my business to where it is today.

What were the first few steps you took to set up the business?

I got a business mentor and she helped me set up my business initially and has guided me to continue to grow these last few years. With her I was able to leave my full-time job at the Government, work full time in my business, hire staff, open in a commercial premises and be able to take time off for mat leave. I believe having a business mentor is crucial if you want to succeed in business.

What were some of the biggest challenges you faced when starting your business, and how did you overcome them?

There is no one challenge that is bigger than another. As a business owner you face challenges daily, as business is always up and down. You have good days and bad days. The biggest obstacle as a business owner is our fears, what scares us and intimidates us, what stops us from taking a risk or doing something outside of our comfort zones – it’s really our own mindsets, which is why personal development and self-improvement are so important as a business owner and the growth of a business.

What is a decision or perhaps a mistake you've made that has lead to a very valuable lesson in running or starting a business?

Not placing importance on cashflow and budgeting. Despite how good you are at what you do, if you don’t know your numbers well it can cause serious issues. Last Christmas I over ordered on stock and ended up with a huge bill which took me months to pay off. It’s all about right place and right time and I’ve learnt that as much as I want to bring in a particular device or product, I can only do so when the numbers indicate it’s the right time to do so…. otherwise, you end up setting yourself up for a lot of stress and potential failure.

If you had just 1 piece of advice for our Frenchies who are wanting to start their own business, what would it be?

Just start, don’t wait for everything to be perfect. Just start, start small and then grow from there.

“If you want to have a truly successful career, good life,
and trustworthy friends you need to work hard. Luck
can only take you so far, but the rest is entirely up to you.”

- Aleisha Lipschinski

What motivated you to pursue a career in beauty therapy?

I am a classic empath and have always wanted to help people. Beauty was my calling! My career first started off with makeup but then evolved to skin. This is where I found my true passion, helping people to enhance their most loved facial features.

I wanted to help people become more confident and guide people into taking care of their skin and that’s what pushed me to step into the glorious world of beauty.

What was your main motivation for studying at the French?

I wanted to go somewhere to help me shine and grow to become the best version of myself. I wanted a school that would support my ambitions and goals. After my first interview at The French, I knew it was the school for me.

What was your favourite part about studying at the French? How would you describe your experience from the day you started at orientation?

The environment! The welcoming feeling and encouragement I received on campus was exceptional. I remember being very nervous on oOrientation day, not knowing anyone. The room full of strangers eventually turned into some of my closest friends. I looked forward to everyday on campus, every day I would learn something new.

How did the French help prepare you for life as a professional beauty therapist?

The Service excellence program was like no other, teaching students valuable life lessons like how to be a good person with  compassion, honesty, communication, resilience and so much more. They taught me how to become the best version of myself!

Did you have a favourite teacher / subject at the french? Why?

I wouldn’t be able to name just one, but my beauty educator Josie and my make up educator Kat made my year at The French so enjoyable. They were vital in shaping who I am today and the knowledge I now hold. They taught me to believe in myself and let my personality shine!

What is the best advice you received from your study at the French?

The best advice I got was to keep going, even when you wanted to give up. All the hard work you’re doing now will pay off.

What were some of the MOST VALUABLE lessons LEARNED at The French that you have been able to apply to your new career?

If you want to have a truly successful career, good life, and trustworthy friends you need to work hard. Luck can only take you so far, but the rest is entirely up to you, the amount of effort you put in everyday and the ability to learn from your mistakes.

How easy was it for you to gain work after graduating? Tell me about your first career ‘break’?

It was very easy! I was employed before finishing the course. I had multiple offers from various employers before graduation, I chose Silk Laser Clinics.

What elements of your study allowed you to obtain your new job? Were there any specific skills that you learned from your time at The French that you then highlighted in order to be hired?

The French etiquette. The way we are taught to present and hold ourselves and the way we act with clients makes you more appealing to an employer.

How are The French graduates perceived out in the industry?

The French is very well known. I  always say that the French will push you to be the best you can be in every way. With presentation, respect, honesty, and much more. You are always treated with respect after that.

Describe a day in the life of you at work…

A day in my life for is always very busy with laser hair removal and skin clients.

Why is it so exciting to work within the beauty industry right now?

There is so much new exiting technology! There is always something that’s going to help someone become more confident.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO STUDENTS WHO ARE WANTING TO STUDY A BEAUTY THERAPY DIPLOMA AT THE FRENCH BEAUTY ACADEMY?

My advice is to pace yourself; you’re going to have a lot of work and a short amount of time to do it. If you do things one by one the snowball cannot form. Once the snowball is formed that’s when it starts getting hectic. This time is going to be the start of your amazing career you’re going to want to take every single opportunity you can, and you cannot do that with your head in the sand. If you do feel snowed under, ask for help! Don’t bury your head in the sand hoping the storm will roll out when you’re in denial, it won’t. The educators are there to help you succeed.

What are your goals for the next few years? Do you have an ultimate career ambition?

I have been accepted into UNISA to study the Bachelor of Nursing; I want to be a cosmetic injector so I will study part time for the next 6 years while still learning all I can at SILK. I also hope to learn about CoolSculpting and EmSculpt and more invasive treatments that are driven with results.

A TIP from aleisha...

OUR FLAGSHIP BEAUTY THERAPY DIPLOMA

What motivated you to pursue a career in beauty therapy?

I was working in a corporate admin role and feeling unfulfilled and searching for ‘more’. For me that meant career fulfilment, job satisfaction and being truly passionate about what I do. I spent countless hours searching for the perfect ‘job’ that seemed it would be the most fulfilling and I kept coming back to beauty therapy – something I honestly never thought I would want to pursue but I knew when visiting salons myself I always left feeling so good, so I finally decided to take the leap into the beauty industry!

What was your main motivation for studying at the French?

Deciding to step down from full time work to study something completely outside of my comfort zone was one of the hardest (yet best decisions) I have had to make. I knew if I was going to find the fulfilment I was searching for I had to align myself with the best. After spending hours researching training academies I knew there was only one option! The French had such amazing course options! But more importantly, their values aligned so well with mine.

What was your favourite part about studying at the French? How would you describe your experience from the day you started at orientation?

I enjoyed every aspect of my experience at The French. I was so nervous on Orientation day thinking I was ‘too old’ for a career change but as soon as the formalities were underway and I started connecting with fellow students and educators, I knew I’d made the right decision. I felt so cared for during my year at The French and not only walked away feeling confident in my new trade but having life long friends and connections.

How did the French help prepare you for life as a professional beauty therapist?

The Service Excellence program  allowed us to build confidence and work on our self-worth. This along with the opportunities I had throughout the year to gain experience in the industry.

Did you have a favourite teacher / subject at the french? Why?

I had a positive experience with all of my educators although my favourite classes were massage with Jai and facials with Lorrain and Alana. These ladies helped build my confidence and shape me into the therapist I am today. I am so grateful to each of them!

What is the best advice you received from your study at the French?

You will be giving so much of yourself to your clients so don’t forget to schedule regular self-care moments for yourself.

It can be so easy to burn out in our industry and being a part of it has made me honour and hold space for my own beauty and self-care routines. I live and breathe what I preach to my clients and know that I am giving them my best when I am feeling at my best.

How easy was it for you to gain work after graduating? Tell me about your first career ‘break’?

For me I found it so easy to gain work. I actually had several job opportunities while I was still studying and I made sure to volunteer and network at every event The French hosted.

How are The French graduates perceived out in the industry?

The French graduates are very highly regarded!

Describe a day in the life of you at work…

Every day is different and that’s what I love about our industry. Being a sole owner/operator means my day starts before I even arrive in the salon and then I spend all day treating my beautiful clients. I feel so grateful that I now go to ‘work’ with a true love for what I do.

Why is it so exciting to work within the beauty industry right now?

The beauty industry is ever-evolving and there is always something new to learn.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO STUDENTS WHO ARE WANTING TO STUDY A BEAUTY THERAPY DIPLOMA AT THE FRENCH BEAUTY ACADEMY?

Go for it! Even if you have the tiniest inkling that you think you want to study beauty therapy, pursue it. There are so many career options upon graduating and like me… It might just change your life.

What are your goals for the next few years? Do you have an ultimate career ambition?

Launching SAVY just over three years ago, it was my ultimate career ambition to own my own business. I am so proud of how I have built this little community of like-minded woman (and men) who choose to visit me for their self-care needs.

I am open to the idea of helping others in our industry and have even been approached by a few training providers to see if I would be interested in becoming an educator. The timing wasn’t right but … never say never. I am excited to see where SAVY takes me!

Why did you decide to start your own business? Can you tell us a bit about your journey?

SAVY was inspired by my desire to create a haven for self-care. I wanted anyone who walked through our doors to feel welcomed and nurtured. I find the utmost fulfilment in building client relationships and witnessing their self-esteem grow with every treatment.

What were the first few steps you took to set up the business?

Applied for an ABN, registered my business name, found a space to work from and focused on building an online presence.

“I find the utmost fulfilment in building client relationships and witnessing their self-esteem grow with every treatment.”

- Sarah Paynter

What were some of the biggest challenges you faced when starting your business, and how did you overcome them?

My biggest challenge was actually learning to say “no”. As a new business owner I was afraid that if I wasn’t available to my clients 24/7 that they would go elsewhere. This wasn’t sustainable and learned I had to set firm boundaries in place if I wanted to continue SAVY long-term.

What is a decision or perhaps a mistake you've made that has lead to a very valuable lesson in running or starting a business?

I pride myself on valuing my clients time which means I am always (mostly) running ahead of my schedule. Because My clients know that I respect and value their time they also show me the same respect, valuing the time I have held for them. I was so worried about introducing deposits when I opened SAVY, but it has been such a good business decision that clients also like.

What did you learn during your time at The French that helped prepare you when starting your business or during the course of your business journey?

The French held us all to such a high standard and that set the benchmark for who and where I wanted to be in the beauty world. This taught me to hold myself to the same high standard. You can be professional and nurturing at the same time.

What are your plans for the future of your business, and where do you see yourself in five years?

I want to continue to grow SAVY as a place for self care. I’d love to have my own wellness space with an amazing team who love the industry as much as I do. If I do grow my team I want them to feel like they are a valued part of SAVY.

If you had just 1 piece of advice for our Frenchies who are wanting to start their own business, what would it be?

Study hard, gain industry experience where possible and set the standard high from the get-go.

Of course, if you have more tips, please share them with us!

Do everything with intention.

What motivated you to pursue a career in beauty therapy?

I love all things beauty and making people feel beautiful in their own skin.

What was your main motivation for studying at the French?

The French emanated the type of beauty therapist I wanted to be. Refined and polished in every aspect. From uniforms, beauty practices, right down to the reception when you first walk in, it is all about the experience.

What was your favourite part about studying at the French? How would you describe your experience from the day you started at orientation?

I loved the personal growth journey The French took me on. Each day was a new lesson. My favourite part of orientation day was the scent ceremony and writing a note to my future self.

Orientation day was not what I was expecting. I thought it would be a tour around the fire exits but it was so much more. It was the first time I sat back and realised I was about to embark on something very profound.

How did the French help prepare you for life as a professional beauty therapist?

The knowledge and experience that the teaching staff have and share help prepare you for things in the industry that can’t be learned from a book.

Did you have a favourite teacher / subject at the french? Why?

Nadine Russell. Nadine not only talked the talk when it came to being a professional beauty therapist, but she also walked the walk.  She was always presented immaculately, on time and prepared for everyday she came to The French.

What is the best advice you received from your study at the French?

This is only the start of your journey; there is so much to beauty, and you will continue learning long after you have graduated.

Why is it so exciting to work in the beauty industry right now?

The beauty industry is constantly changing. New practices, new technology but at the same time, at the core of change and evolution, is our desire to care for others.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO STUDENTS WHO ARE WANTING TO STUDY A BEAUTY THERAPY DIPLOMA AT THE FRENCH BEAUTY ACADEMY?

My advice is always to take the plunge. Not only is it one of the most rewarding industries to be in, but you learn so much about yourself along the way.

I wanted to create my own brand of beauty, caring for others, as well as providing a beautiful and tranquil space.

Started small with minimal equipment. Each week adding something new. I researched my market area and target market.

What were some of the biggest challenges you faced when starting your business, and how did you overcome them?

Cash flow – work within your means. Expect that great things take time to build. Have patience.

What is a decision or perhaps a mistake you've made that has led to a very valuable lesson in running or starting a business?

Get professionals in to sort your bookkeeping and accounting early. They love what they do, and they allow us to do what we love!

I would love to teach at The French, share my knowledge and enhance someone else’s journey.
